Mar 31, 2024Gas prices: With Canada-U.S. tariffs on pause, why are pump rates rising?
Canada's gas price average climbed this week, moving higher with fuel costs in the United States, according to data from Kalibrate.
However, drivers would be wrong to blame Canada-U.S. trade tensions casting uncertainty over North America's highly integrated oil industry. Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, says it's all about the annual switch to summer blends of gasoline.
“This increase has nothing to do with politics or tariffs — which remain paused for now — but is instead the result of seasonality, and is something that happens almost every year," he wrote in a blog post this week.
Canada's elimination of the federal consumer carbon tax could deliver some savings after April 1. According to Randall Bartlett, deputy chief economist at Desjardins, drivers should see a drop of 18 cents per litre on April 1 in provinces where the carbon tax has been in effect.
These include Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, as well as the territories of Nunavut and Yukon. British Columbia's government plans to eliminate its consumer carbon tax on April 1.
The Canada-wide average, spanning nearly 80 cities, rose two cents per litre between March 20 and March 27. North Bay, Ont. saw the biggest weekly increase, at 16.6 cents per litre of regular fuel. The biggest discount was in Brandon, Man., at 13.2 cents per litre.
